First and foremost, this blog is about 'Silang Budaya Sana Sini' which may also mean "Cross Cultural Here & There" or "Multicultural Everywhere". It is designed for Cross Cultural Counseling Course.
Before going any further, there are some questions that might come across to our mind. And indeed these questions are very crucial to be answered and understood.
"What is multicultural counseling? How is it different from other form of counseling?"
"Do I really need to view minority students as being different from while students? Shouldn't race or color be unimportant in working with children?"
"Can a counselor from one race really counsel a student who is from another race?"
Some researches said that these questions are often asked in workshops on multicultural counseling conducted with counseling professionals in school systems. Among the contemporary issues facing school counselors and related helping professionals, addressing the developmental needs of the growing number of students from culturally diverse backgrounds is, perhaps, the most challenging.
Multicultural does not only means the differences in culture or race. It can be wider. Racial/Ethnic variation in the cultural context of families and communities can be observed along various dimensions. Some of them are:
1. Notions of kinship
2. Roles and Status
3. Sex-Role Socialization
4. Language
5. Religion/Spirituality
6. Ethnic Identity
7. Environmental Factor
School counselors and related helping professionals who work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds must facilitate the developmental process within a myriad of cultural context.
In a nutshell, getting involve in these kinds of profession requires us to be very knowledgeable and master the required skills in order to provide effective services to the target clients. The journey is still far away in front. Let us make a move and get ourselves prepared with whatever necessary.
